BAC Formula

Simplified Widmark Estimate

BAC ≈ Alcohol grams ÷ Body water factor − Metabolism

This page uses a simplified estimate. Real BAC can only be measured reliably with proper testing equipment.

Complete Guide

BAC, or blood alcohol content, is an estimate of alcohol concentration in the bloodstream. It is commonly expressed as a percentage. For example, 0.05% BAC means alcohol is present in the blood at that estimated concentration.

Online BAC calculators are useful for education, but they are not reliable enough for legal or driving decisions. Two people can drink the same amount and still have different BAC levels because of body size, metabolism, food intake, medicine, health, hydration, and drinking speed.

The alcohol percentage of a drink also matters. A small strong drink can contain more alcohol than a larger weak drink. That is why this calculator asks for drink size and ABV instead of assuming all drinks are equal.

Time is the main factor that reduces BAC. Coffee, water, bathing, walking, or sleeping for a short time does not instantly remove alcohol from the bloodstream. The body needs time to metabolize alcohol.

The safest approach is simple: if you have consumed alcohol, do not drive or operate machinery. Arrange a sober driver, cab, public transport, or stay where you are.

BAC Calculator FAQs

1. What is BAC?

BAC means blood alcohol content. It estimates the amount of alcohol in a person's bloodstream, usually shown as a percentage.

2. How does this BAC calculator work?

This calculator estimates BAC using body weight, drink quantity, alcohol strength, drink size, biological sex estimate, and time elapsed.

3. Is this BAC calculator accurate?

No online BAC calculator can be fully accurate. Real BAC depends on food, health, medication, metabolism, hydration, drink measurement, and testing method.

4. Can I use this calculator to decide if I can drive?

No. Never use this calculator to decide whether you can drive. If you have consumed alcohol, the safest decision is not to drive.

5. What formula is used for BAC?

This calculator uses a simplified Widmark-style estimate and subtracts estimated alcohol metabolism over time.

6. What does ABV mean?

ABV means alcohol by volume. It shows what percentage of a drink is alcohol. For example, 5% ABV beer means 5% of the drink volume is alcohol.

7. How fast does BAC decrease?

A common estimate is about 0.015 BAC percentage points per hour, but this varies from person to person.

8. Does food affect BAC?

Yes, food can slow alcohol absorption. Drinking on an empty stomach may cause BAC to rise faster.

9. Does body weight affect BAC?

Yes, body weight affects alcohol distribution. Lower body weight can result in higher BAC from the same amount of alcohol.

10. Does gender affect BAC estimates?

Many formulas use different body water constants for male and female estimates, but individual variation can still be large.

11. What is a standard drink?

A standard drink depends on country and alcohol content. The calculator lets you enter drink size and ABV directly for flexibility.

12. Can medication affect BAC or impairment?

Yes, medication can interact with alcohol and increase impairment or health risk. Consult a doctor or pharmacist for medical guidance.

13. Can coffee reduce BAC?

No, coffee does not remove alcohol from the bloodstream. Only time reduces BAC.

14. Can water reduce BAC?

Water can help hydration but does not quickly remove alcohol from blood. Time is required for metabolism.

15. What BAC level is dangerous?

Higher BAC levels can be dangerous and may require medical attention, especially if there is confusion, vomiting, unconsciousness, or slow breathing.

16. What should I do if someone seems heavily intoxicated?

Keep them safe, do not leave them alone, avoid giving more alcohol, and seek emergency help if symptoms are serious.

17. Why can two people have different BAC after the same drinks?

BAC can differ due to body size, biological factors, metabolism, food intake, health, medication, and drinking speed.

18. Does BAC equal impairment?

BAC and impairment are related, but impairment can vary. Even low BAC may affect reaction time and judgment.

19. How long until BAC is zero?

The calculator estimates time to zero using a common metabolism rate, but actual time can vary.

20. Is this BAC calculator free?

Yes, HQCalc BAC calculator is free and works instantly in your browser.
