Percentage Change Formula

Standard Formula

Percentage Change = ((New - Old) / Old) × 100

Example: 100 to 125 gives ((125 - 100) / 100) × 100 = 25% increase.

Complete Guide

Percentage change is used to measure how much a value has increased or decreased compared with its original value. It is one of the most common calculations in business, finance, school marks, sales, salary, prices, and data analysis.

The formula compares the difference between the new and old value with the old value. If the result is positive, the value increased. If the result is negative, the value decreased.

For example, if a price increases from 100 to 125, the absolute difference is 25. Dividing 25 by 100 gives 0.25, and multiplying by 100 gives 25%.

Percentage change is different from absolute change. Absolute change only says how much the number moved. Percentage change shows the size of that movement relative to the starting value.

The original value cannot be zero in this formula because division by zero is not defined. If the old value is zero, percentage change cannot be calculated using the standard method.

Percentage Change FAQs

1. What is percentage change?

Percentage change shows how much a value has increased or decreased compared with its original value.

2. How does this percentage change calculator work?

Enter the old value and new value. The calculator subtracts old value from new value, divides by old value, and multiplies by 100.

3. What is the percentage change formula?

Percentage change = ((New Value - Old Value) / Old Value) × 100.

4. How do I calculate percentage increase?

If the new value is greater than the old value, use ((new - old) / old) × 100 to calculate percentage increase.

5. How do I calculate percentage decrease?

If the new value is less than the old value, use ((new - old) / old) × 100. The result will be negative, showing a decrease.

6. What does a positive percentage change mean?

A positive percentage change means the new value is higher than the old value.

7. What does a negative percentage change mean?

A negative percentage change means the new value is lower than the old value.

8. What is 100 to 125 percentage change?

The percentage change from 100 to 125 is 25% increase.

9. What is 100 to 80 percentage change?

The percentage change from 100 to 80 is 20% decrease.

10. Can old value be zero?

No, old value cannot be zero in percentage change calculation because the formula divides by old value.

11. What is absolute change?

Absolute change is the simple difference between new value and old value. It does not use percentage.

12. What is multiplier in percentage change?

Multiplier shows how many times the new value is compared to the old value. For example, 200 from 100 is 2x.

13. Is percentage change same as percentage difference?

Not exactly. Percentage change compares old to new value, while percentage difference often compares two values using their average.

14. Where is percentage change used?

It is used in finance, business, marks, salary, prices, sales, profit, loss, population, data analysis, and daily comparisons.

15. How do I calculate price increase percentage?

Subtract old price from new price, divide by old price, and multiply by 100.

16. How do I calculate salary hike percentage?

Subtract old salary from new salary, divide by old salary, and multiply by 100.

17. How do I calculate discount decrease?

To calculate decrease from original price to discounted price, use ((discounted price - original price) / original price) × 100.

18. Can this calculator handle negative values?

Yes, it can calculate changes with negative values, but interpretation depends on the context.

19. Why is my percentage change undefined?

Percentage change is undefined when the old value is zero because division by zero is not allowed.

20. Is this percentage change calculator free?

Yes, HQCalc percentage change calculator is free and works instantly in your browser.
